LA mayor to be named Democratic National Convention chairman

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) will be named chairman of the 2012 Democratic National Convention by Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Wednesday. "Mayor Villaraigosa has dedicated his career to civic engagement and empowering people at the grassroots," Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. "And that?s exactly what we need to be successful at this convention?input and engagement from Americans across the country." Wasserman Schultz's nomination will go to the Convention Rules Committee and then be voted on by 2012 convention delegates in an opening session. "At this convention we want to engage Americans in a conversation about how we can strengthen the country in a way that creates more opportunity for all," Villaraigosa said. Villaraigosa's selection may be an effort by the DNC to appeal to a Hispanic voters, a constituency both Republicans and Democrats plan on going after in 2012.
