Even More Internet Terms Demystified | Computers and Technology

So this would be the third instalment of my web lingo series to help people better understand some common terms that are thrown around on the internet. It?s my objective that these help you in your daily computing and not compel you to ask your local IT support person to clarify these terms for you.

Server

Mail server, server, file server. What is a server? At work I?m certain you?ve seen a computer that has been locked away in a cabinet that the IT person goes and looks at when your net isn?t working. That?d be your server, a PC which all other PCs are hooked up to. In an office it can have many roles, eg user authentication, or storing files or perhaps serve you e-mails. On the internet a server holds websites, so you can surf them to your hearts content.

Wi-Fi

Folks are inclined to make use of this word for anything that has radio connectivity, but what it basically stands for is Wireless Fidelity, very much like how Hi-Fi stands for High Fidelity. There are many wireless bands, for example A, B, G and N. You do not have to fret about any of those letters however, as most wireless networks are smart enough to make all devices deal sensibly with each other.

Kbps/Mbps/Gbps

OMG what?s with all these acronyms? Well, as you might have figured out, the last 3 letters are all the same, and they stand for Bits Per second. So what does the K, M and G stand for then? Well, The K is Kilo, M is Mega and G is Giga, as per standard mathematic units. I takes about 1000 Kilobits to make 1 Megabit, and about 1000 Megabit to make a Gigabit. This is typically used to measure data speed on a network.

I?m hoping these articles have helped you on your Internet journey. If you need any further assistance do get in contact.
