Tornado watch issued for Horry, Georgetown counties
MYRTLE BEACH -- The National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. issued a tornado watch for Horry and Georgetown counties just before 8:30 p.m.
The watch does not expire until 2 a.m.
The advisory is related to a storm system headed towards the Grand Strand.
Already, the system spawned tornados in Alabama and Georgia. It is expected to bring strong winds between 20 mph and 30 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Organizers say it drew over 12,000 parade goers to downtown Wilmington but some business owners say the Martin Luther King parade hurt their business.
"Every step is a process and ever process is a learning process so I think this was a growing pain," said John Hinnant of Wilmington Downtown Incorporated.
A growing pain that brought businessmen and bikers together inside the confines of city hall to discuss ways to improve the Martin Luther King Parade.
After years on Castle Street the parade route was moved to Front Street, which provided mixed results.
"It's a very passionate thing,? said deputy city manager Tony Caudle. ?It's something that has been very well attended on Castle Street for a very long time. Moving it to a new location obviously a lot of folks didn't know it was going to happen. So I think it's very important to make sure that we reach out into the community and make sure we channel some of that passion back into constructive criticism."
That constructive criticism was written down and discussed amongst the attendees, many of whom say despite a few negatives, holding the parade downtown was overall a positive experience.
"Having walked in the parade on Castle Street and having attended the parade on Castle Street I knew that this was an opportunity to really grow the event into a true community event with a diverse audience with more kids and more families and that happened and to that end it was a success,? said John Hinnant.
"I think it was a net positive,? said Tony Caudle. ?Some of the business folks are concerned that they didn't get as much business out of it that they would like to see. There is always that concern when you block off streets but you know I think it's a net positive anytime you can 12,000 people downtown on a Monday that aren't in office buildings, I think that's a good thing."

"Argo" boosts Oscar chances with two weekend award
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Iran hostage drama "Argo" won its second big award in two days on Sunday, boosting its chances of winning a best picture Oscar next month in a race that had been considered wide open.
"Argo" won best cast ensemble, the top prize, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence took lead acting honors.
On Saturday, "Argo" won the Producers Guild Award - a key measure of Hollywood sentiment - beating "Lincoln," "Les Miserables," and "Silver Linings Playbook," which are all Academy Award best picture contenders.
"There was absolutely no way I thought we would win this award," the film's director and star, Ben Affleck, told reporters backstage after the SAG win. "Argo" is the true story of the rescue of U.S. diplomats stranded in Tehran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Asked about his movie's Oscar chances, Affleck said he was not in the business of "handicapping or trying to divine what's going to happen down the road."
"I don't know what's going to happen, nothing may happen, but it's a wonderful opportunity to be on the ride," Affleck added.
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) ceremony is among the most-watched during Hollywood's awards season because actors make up the largest voting group in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which chooses the Oscar winners. The SAG honors are selected by about 100,000 actors working in the United States.
SAG prizes acting over directing, screenplay writing and other skills that usually factor into the Oscar best picture choice.
PLAYING DOWN OSCAR HOPES
British-born Day-Lewis, who has picked up a slew of awards for his intense portrayal of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's efforts to abolish slavery in "Lincoln," confirmed his status as front-runner for what would be his record third Oscar on February 24.
But the actor played down his Oscar hopes backstage. "Members of the academy love surprises, so about the worst thing that can happen to you is if you've built up an expectation," Day-Lewis told reporters.
Accepting his award on stage to a standing ovation, he recalled that "it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln and, therefore, it is sometimes only fitting that, now and then, an actor tries to bring him back to life again."
In one of the most closely contested categories, Lawrence, 22, was chosen best lead actress for playing an outspoken young widow in "Silver Linings Playbook" over Jessica Chastain's feisty CIA agent in Osama bin Laden thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."
Tommy Lee Jones, 66, won the best supporting actor trophy for his turn as radical Congressman Thaddeus Stevens in "Lincoln," beating strong competition from Robert De Niro, who played a gruff father in "Silver Linings Playbook."
Anne Hathaway, 30, won her first SAG award for her supporting role as the tragic Fantine in musical "Les Miserables."
"I got my SAG card when I was 14 ... And I have loved every single minute of my life as an actor," said Hathaway, accepting the statuette.
SAG also handed out awards for performances in TV dramas, comedies and mini-series, and gave a lifetime achievement award to actor Dick Van Dyke.
In TV drama, the British cooks and countesses period show "Downton Abbey" won best ensemble cast. "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston was named best actor and "Homeland's" Claire Danes best actress.
"Modern Family" won the best comedy cast ensemble award for a third consecutive time. Alec Baldwin won best TV comedy actor for the 8th time for his role as an egotistical executive in "30 Rock" and his co-star Tina Fey took the honors for comedy actress ahead of the show's final episode on Thursday.

Yahoo revenue rises on search advertising
(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc posted a 4 percent gain in net revenue to $1.22 billion in the fourth quarter, when an increase in search advertising sales offset weakness in the Web portal's display ad business.
The company forecast net revenue -- which excludes fees shared with partner websites -- of $1.07 billion to $1.1 billion in the current quarter, trailing the $1.1 billion that Wall Street analysts expect on average.
Shares in Yahoo, which is trying to stave off declines across much of its business and revive growth, were up 1.5 percent in after hours trade. They had risen 4.5 percent before the revenue projections were disclosed on an analysts' conference call.
"We got the revenue acceleration we were hoping for. Display was down, but search is doing better" said Sameet Sinha, an analyst at B. Riley Caris.
"As long as in the near-term things are not bad, I think the stock will generally act positively while we wait for Marissa Mayer to deliver," said Sinha.
The company said on Monday its fourth-quarter net income was $272.3 million, or 23 cents per share, versus $295.6 million, or 24 cents per share in the year-ago period.
Excluding certain items, Yahoo said it had earnings per share of 32 cents, versus the average analyst expectation of 28 cents according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Chief Executive Marissa Mayer is moving to revive the company's fortunes after several years of declining revenue. Yahoo's stock has risen roughly 30 percent since she became CEO, reaching its highest levels since 2008.
Yahoo said it repurchased $1.5 billion worth of shares during the fourth quarter. Shares in the company were up 1.5 percent at $20.61 in extended trading from a close of $20.31 on the Nasdaq.

Euro, shares pause as investors turn cautious
LONDON (Reuters) - World shares dipped on Monday and oil prices steadied due to investors' caution on whether the strength of the global economic recovery justifies the sharp rally so far this year.
U.S. stock index futures pointed to a similarly flat session on Wall Street, with traders reluctant to extend a rally that has taken the benchmark Standard and Poor's 500 index <.spx> to its highest level in over five years.
The wariness is in anticipation of a series of significant U.S. economic events this week, including the initial estimate of fourth quarter GDP, the Federal Reserve's first policy meeting of the year and the January payrolls data.
"Markets don't go up in a straight line," said Garry Evans, global head of equity strategy at HSBC. "I think that people are realizing there could still be problems out there."
Adding to the potential pitfalls ahead were signs from Washington that the $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts due to take effect by March 1 could go ahead, threatening a hit to confidence in the giant U.S. economy.
MSCI's benchmark world share index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.1 percent on Monday, though it has gained nearly 4.5 percent this month on signs of economic recovery in the United States, stabilization in the euro zone and accelerating growth in China.
European stocks were unchanged, with the broad FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top company shares hovering just under a two-year high.
The market's softer tone also followed a weaker session in Asia, where falls in technology companies saw the MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> drop 0.4 percent.
EUROPEAN ECONOMY FLAT
Data from the European Central Bank gave another reminder that the recent surge in financial markets is not being matched in the real economy.
Lending by banks to euro zone companies, consumers and home buyers contracted in December for the eighth month running as recessions across much of the region sap the appetite to borrow and banks' willingness to lend.
"As of the end of 2012, there was no sign of improvement in credit flows," said Marie Diron, an economist who works on Ernst & Young's euro zone forecasts. "However, we think that during 2013, with a much more secure economic environment than last year, banks will start easing credit standards somewhat, and companies will be more willing to borrow to invest in the euro zone."
Data showing inflows to global equity funds had slowed in the past week, and comments from several major investment banks noting signs that the market may be reaching a natural top added to the caution.
Among the warning signs was Citigroup's U.S. Economic Surprise Indicator, which tracks how new data compares with expectations <.cesiusd>. This has turned negative, while the survey by the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) remains in the top 5 percent of its observed readings.
JP Morgan said in a note that historical data for each of these readings shows they are normally followed by lackluster equity returns.
CURRENCIES DIVERGE
The euro was down 0.2 percent against the dollar at $1.3435, slipping from an 11-month high of $1.3480 hit on Friday.
The euro rallied on Friday after data showed European banks plan to repay more than expected of the loans they borrowed from the European Central Bank during the debt crisis.
The early repayments mean the ECB is the first major central bank to start moving away from unconventional monetary policy measures, unlike the U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan, which are buying bonds to stimulate growth. More stimulus usually weighs down on a currency as it increases its supply.
"There is still some room for euro to go higher, but the road upwards will be characterized by bumps, pauses and even by corrections," said Ulrich Leuchtmann, head of FX research at Commerzbank.
The dollar was down 0.2 percent against the yen at 90.70 yen, though the Japanese currency is expected to remain weak on expectations that Japan's government will keep pushing for aggressive monetary easing, whereas the Fed's view could change if the economic recovery strengthens.
In commodity markets oil prices steadied near a three-month high at just over $113 a barrel before the Fed meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday and the employment data on Friday that should show more signs of recovery in the world's biggest oil consumer.
Other commodities also rose on evidence that the world's number two economy China is now picking up pace, along with optimism that the euro zone is past the worst, Japan's efforts to revive its stagnant economy and the signs of U.S. growth.
Growth-attuned palladium rose to $741.75 an ounce, its highest since September 2011, leading climbs by platinum and copper, while traditional safe-haven gold struggled near a two-week low.
"China's economic growth could be over 8 percent this year. China's economy supports a very large part of global demand," Lou Jiwei, chairman of the country's sovereign wealth fund said over the weekend.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Boy Scouts of America may soon give sponsors of troops the authority to decide whether to accept gays as scouts and leaders - a potentially dramatic retreat from a nationwide no-gays policy that has provoked relentless protests.
Under the change now being discussed, the different religious and civic groups that sponsor Scout units would be able to decide for themselves how to address the issue ? either maintaining an exclusion of gays, as is now required of all units, or opening up their membership.
Gay-rights activists were elated at the prospect of change, sensing another milestone to go along with recent advances for same-sex marriage and the end of the ban on gays serving openly in the military.
However, Southern Baptist leaders ? who consider homosexuality a sin ? were furious about the possible change and said its approval might encourage Southern Baptist churches to support other boys' organizations instead of the BSA.
Monday's announcement of the possible change comes after years of protests over the no-gays policy ? including petition campaigns that have prompted some corporations to suspend donations to the Boy Scouts.
Under the proposed change, said BSA spokesman Deron Smith, "the Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members, or parents."
Smith said the change could be announced as early as next week, after BSA's national board concludes a regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 6. The meeting will be closed to the public.
The BSA, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, has long excluded both gays and atheists. Smith said a change in the policy toward atheists was not being considered, and that the BSA continued to view "Duty to God" as one of its basic principles.
Protests over the no-gays policy gained momentum in 2000, when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the BSA's right to exclude gays. Scout units lost sponsorships by public schools and other entities that adhered to nondiscrimination policies, and several local Scout councils made public their displeasure with the policy.
More recently, pressure surfaced on the Scouts' own national executive board. Two high-powered members ? Ernst & Young CEO James Turley and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson ? indicated they would try to work from within to change the membership policy, which stood in contrast to their own companies' non-discrimination policies.
Amid petition campaigns, shipping giant UPS Inc. and drug-manufacturer Merck announced that they were halting donations from their charitable foundations to the Boy Scouts as long as the no-gays policy was in force.
Also, local Scout officials drew widespread criticism in recent months for ousting Jennifer Tyrrell, a lesbian mom, as a den leader of her son's Cub Scout pack in Ohio and for refusing to approve an Eagle Scout application by Ryan Andresen, a California teen who came out as gay last fall.
Tyrrell said she's thrilled for parents and their children who've been excluded from scouting and "for those who are in Scouts and hiding who they are."
"For me it's not just about the Boy Scouts of America, it's about equality," she told The Associated Press. "This is a step toward equality in all aspects."
Many of the protest campaigns, including one seeking Tyrrell's reinstatement, had been waged with help from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
"The Boy Scouts of America have heard from scouts, corporations and millions of Americans that discriminating against gay scouts and scout leaders is wrong," said Herndon Graddick, GLAAD's president. "Scouting is a valuable institution, and this change will only strengthen its core principles of fairness and respect."
Among those urging the Boy Scouts to keep the no-gays policy was Tony Perkins, president of the conservative Family Research Council.
"The Boy Scouts of America board would be making a serious mistake to bow to the strong-arm tactics of LGBT activists and open the organization to homosexuality," Perkins said. "The Boy Scouts should stand firm in their timeless values and respect the right of parents to discuss these sexual topics with their children."
The Scouts had reaffirmed the no-gays policy as recently as last year, and appeared to have strong backing from conservative religious denominations ? notably the Mormons, Roman Catholics and Southern Baptists ? which sponsor large numbers of Scout units. Under the proposed change, they could continue excluding gays.
Prior to Monday's announcement, the BSA conferred with some leaders of these religious groups, including the Rev. Frank Page, who leads the Southern Baptist Executive Committee.
According Roger S. Oldham, a spokesman for the executive committee, Page then wrote to the Scouts "expressing his tremendous dismay at the decision."
"They had been working for months on this proposal and just days before they informed us," Oldham said in a telephone interview. "We would anticipate that there would be a very significant backlash to this as churches reevaluate whether scouting comports with."
If the Scouts proceed with the change, Oldham said, SBC leaders were likely to issue a statement "expressing disappointed and encouraging our churches to support alternative boys organizations."
Neither the Catholic Church nor the Mormons' Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued official statements as to how they would respond.
Said Sister Mary Ann Walsh, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, "The bishops hope the Boy Scouts will continue to work under the Judeo-Christians principles upon which they were founded and under which they have served youth well."
Were the change adopted, said Deron Smith, "there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, and the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization's mission, principles, or religious beliefs.
"BSA members and parents would be able to choose a local unit that best meets the needs of their families," he said. "Under this proposed policy, the BSA would not require any chartered organization to act in ways inconsistent with that organization's mission, principles, or religious beliefs."
The announcement came shortly after new data showed that membership in the Cub Scouts ? the BSA's biggest division ? dropped sharply last year, and was down nearly 30 percent over the past 14 years.
According to figures provided by the organization, Cub Scout ranks dwindled by 3.4 percent, from 1,583,166 in 2011 to 1,528,673 in 2012. That's down from 2.17 million in 1998.
The Boy Scouts attribute the decline largely to broad social changes, including the allure of video games and the proliferation of youth sports leagues and other options for after-school activities.
However, critics of the Scouts suggest that its recruitment efforts have been hampered by high-profile controversies ? notably the court-ordered release of files dealing with sex abuse allegations and persistent protests over the no-gays policy.
The BSA's overall "traditional youth membership" ? Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers ? totaled 2,658,794 in 2012, compared to more than 4 million in peak years of the past. There were 910,668 Boy Scouts last year, a tiny increase from 2011, while the ranks of Venturers ? a program for youths 14 and older? declined by 5.5 percent.
In addition to flak over the no-gays policy, the Scouts have been buffeted by multiple court cases related to past allegations of sexual abuse by Scout leaders, including those chronicled in long-confidential records that are widely known as the "perversion files."
Through various cases, the Scouts have been forced to reveal files dating from the 1960s to 1991. They detailed numerous cases where abuse claims were made and Boy Scout officials never alerted authorities and sometimes actively sought to protect the accused.
The Scouts are now under a California court order, affirmed this month by the state Supreme Court, to turn over sex-abuse files from 1991 through 2011 to the lawyers for a former Scout who claims a leader molested him in 2007, when he was 13. It's not clear how soon the files might become public.
The BSA has apologized for past lapses and cover-ups, and has stressed the steps taken to improve youth protection policy. Since 2010, for example, it has mandated that any suspected abuse be reported to police.

Kenya 2013 tea earnings seen beating 2012 record figure
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's tea exports earnings, the east African country's top foreign exchange source, are seen rising 4 percent to 116 billion shillings in 2013, the regulatory Tea Board of Kenya said on Monday.
The world's largest exporter of black tea said export earnings rose 3 percent last year to 112 billion shillings from 109.4 billion in 2011 due to a stable foreign exchange rate and favourable global prices.
This was despite a drop in output, which fell 2 percent to 369 million kilograms. Tea production is expected to rise one percent this year, the regulator said.
"There was lower production across major tea-growing countries such as Kenya, Sri Lanka and Malawi. The decline in tea production across the tea-growing countries was on account of weather conditions," Sicily Kariuki, managing director at the Tea Board of Kenya, told a news conference.
The leading buyers were Pakistan, followed by Egypt and the United Kingdom.
Kariuki said the industry was watching events in Egypt, Kenya's second biggest buyer, especially after recent violence, which was likely to affect tea buyers. Egypt issued a state of emergency on Monday.
"Right now we are keeping tabs on what is happening in Egypt ...By all means it a very important market for us. We desire a stable Egypt," she said.
Kariuki said that total earnings, including local sales, rose to 127 billion shillings last year from 123 billion shillings in 2011.
The country exported 347 million kg of tea in 2012 through weekly auctions at its main port of Mombasa versus 345 million kg a year earlier. The average price rose to $3.18 per kg from $2.99 per kg in 2011, Kariuki said.
Tea export earnings outstripped those of remittances, another major source of foreign exchange, which rose 31 percent to a record $1 billion last year.

A fire that swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday appears to be the deadliest in a decade. Here is a look at some other recent big nightclub fires:
? A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, broke out in December 2009, when an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches, killing 152.

Deep brain stimulation improves autistic boy's symptoms
Surgically implanted electrodes could treat severe cases of the syndrome

Electrodes implanted deep in the brain of a boy with severe autism have enabled him to live a more normal life. The treatment reduced his destructive behavior and allowed the formerly nonverbal boy to speak a few words, scientists report online January 21 in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
The results are the first to use brain stimulation to alleviate symptoms of autism.? Scientists caution that interpreting the results broadly is impossible without larger, systematic studies, but even so neurosurgeon Ali Rezai of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus calls the boys? gains ?intriguing and promising.?
Researchers have become increasingly interested in deep brain stimulation, a technique in which surgically implanted electrodes act as brain pacemakers. For the last two decades, deep brain stimulation has found use treating movement disorders such as the tremors that accompany Parkinson?s disease (SN: 4/11/09, p.11). More recently, scientists have begun experimenting with the technique to treat behavioral and mental problems, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety.
The boy in the study, who was 13 at the time of his experimental surgery, suffered from severe autism symptoms: He couldn?t talk or make eye contact, woke up screaming repeatedly during the night, and habitually injured himself so badly that ?His parents restrained him almost constantly to protect him. Multiple rounds of psychiatric drugs failed to stave off his worsening symptoms.
In an effort to help him, doctors led by Volker Sturm of the University Hospital of Cologne in Germany implanted electrodes into the boy?s brain. Through trial and error, the doctors realized that stimulating a part of the amygdala, a brain structure important for emotions and memory, improved the boy?s symptoms. Stimulating other brain areas had no effect or worsened his symptoms.
After eight weeks of continuous electrical stimulation, the boy shifted on a clinical scale that measures irritability from ?severely ill? to ?moderately ill.? The boy also improved on a scale that measures autism symptoms. He began to make eye contact and was better able to control his behavior.
The boy?s parents reported even more dramatic improvements: His anxiety and self-harming behavior lessened and he slept better at night. He also began to enjoy activities such as tasting new foods, going on car rides and even playing with a piano. After six months of stimulation, the previously nonverbal boy began saying a few simple words such as ?papa? and ?mama.?
The electrodes? stimulation of the brain seemed to be behind the boy?s improvements. After 44 weeks of treatment, the battery on the device ran out of juice. During a monthlong lull in treatment, the boy?s symptoms grew more severe. Once the battery was replaced, his symptoms improved. Rechargeable batteries, which are now available, may circumvent this interruption for future patients, says Rezai.
The next step is to understand how deep brain stimulation changes the brain, particularly in people with behavioral and cognitive problems, Rezai says. That information could allow clinicians to design better therapies for these complex disorders.

U.N. to consider validity of China's claim over disputed islands
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations is planning to consider later this year the scientific validity of a claim by China that a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea are part of its territory, although Japan says the world body should not be involved.
Tensions over the uninhabited islands - located near rich fishing grounds and potentially huge oil and gas reserves - flared after Japan's government purchased them from a private Japanese owner in September, sparking violent anti-Japanese protests across China and a military standoff.
Taiwan also claims the islands, known as the Diaoyu islands in China, the Senkaku islands in Japan and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan.
It was not immediately clear if the U.N. involvement would increase the likelihood the China-Japan dispute would be resolved peacefully. But launching an international legal process that should yield a neutral scientific opinion could reduce the temperature for now in Beijing's spat with Tokyo.
In a submission to the U.N. Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, China says the continental shelf in the East China Sea is a natural prolongation of China's land territory and that it includes the disputed islands.
Under the U.N. convention, a country can extend its 200-nautical-mile economic zone if it can prove that the continental shelf is a natural extension of its land mass. The U.N. commission assesses the scientific validity of claims, but any disputes have to be resolved between states, not by the commission.
China said the "Diaoyu Dao upfold zone" - the islands - is located between the East China Sea shelf basin and the Okinawa Trough. "The Okinawa Trough is the natural termination of the continental shelf of (the East China Sea)," it said.
China also told the commission that it was still negotiating with other states on the delimitation of the continental shelf.
"Recommendations of the commission with regard to the submission will not prejudice future delimitation of the continental shelf between China and the states concerned," said the executive summary of China's submission published on the commission's website.
'NO DOUBT'
The commission said consideration of China's claim would be included in the provisional agenda of a meeting of the body due to be held in New York from July 15 to August 30.
In a letter to the commission, Japan's U.N. mission argued that China's submission should not be considered.
"There is no doubt that the Senkaku Islands are an inherent part of the territory of Japan in light of historical facts and based upon international law. The Senkaku Islands are under the valid control of Japan," it said.
The islands were put under Japan's control in 1895 and were part of the post-World War Two U.S. military occupation zone from 1945 to 1972. They were then returned to Tokyo by U.S. authorities in a decision China and Taiwan later contested.
China responded to Japan's letter by calling Tokyo's claim to the islands "illegal and invalid."
"Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands have been inherent territory of China since ancient times," its U.N. mission said in a letter.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged China and Japan in September to let "cool heads" prevail in the dispute, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.
After Japan's purchase of the islands, protests in China saw Japanese businesses looted, Japanese citizens attacked. Automakers and other Japanese manufacturers reported considerably lower sales in the country.
More recently, Japanese military planes have been scrambled numerous times against Chinese planes approaching airspace over the islands. Chinese planes have also been launched to shadow Japanese planes elsewhere over the East China Sea. Patrol vessels from the two countries have also played a tense game of cat-and-mouse in the waters near the disputed islands.

Depression-era drainage ditches emerge as sleeping threat to Cape Cod salt marshes
Jan. 24, 2013 ? Cape Cod, Massachusetts has a problem. The iconic salt marshes of the famous summer retreat are melting away at the edges, dying back from the most popular recreational areas. The erosion is a consequence of an unexpected synergy between recreational over-fishing and Great Depression-era ditches constructed by Works Progress Administration (WPA) in an effort to control mosquitoes.
The cascade of ecological cause and effect is described by Tyler Coverdale and colleagues at Brown University in a paper published online this month in ESA's journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
"People who live near the marshes complain about the die-off because it's not nice to look at," said Coverdale. "Without cordgrass protection you also get really significant erosion, retreating at sometimes over a meter a year." The die-back is ugly, but it is also a substantial loss of a valuable ecological resource.
When fishermen hook too many predatory fishes out of the marsh's ecosystem, the fishes' prey go on fruitfully multiplying, unchecked. The reverberations down the food chain can result in uncomfortable environmental changes for human residents. The problem for Cape Cod is the native purple marsh crab (Sesarma reticulatum), which burrows in the mud along the inner shorelines of the marshes, and dines almost exclusively on the tall and fast-growing low marsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) that lines the marsh edges.
The tall and sturdy cordgrass is an essential buffer against the friction of tides and storms. Without it, soft banks erode out from under the other plants and the water line retreats farther and farther back into the marsh. The unchecked multitudes of purple marsh crabs have taken a visible toll on the developed areas of the Cape. By 2008, 50 percent of the creek banks in the marsh had worn back. Old drainage ditches have expanded from nearly invisible threads to open channels -- some nearly 30-40 meters wide -- with muddy, exposed edges.
The purple marsh crabs need tidal creek edge habitat to thrive, and do not venture into the inner heart of the marsh, where a shorter cordgrass species (the closely related, but squattier Spartina patens) and other high marsh plants dominate. The old WPA mosquito ditches also fulfill the crabs' habitat requirements. Once benign, the ditches nucleated dramatic reconstruction of the landscape with the loss of blue crab, striped bass, and smooth dogfish, and the subsequent boom of purple marsh crabs.
One of the remarkable features of the cordgrass die-off is its tight locality. Some areas of undeveloped marsh as close as a kilometer to the denuded banks around private residences and public docks appear healthy and unaffected. Mosquito ditches that can only be reached by a hard slog through undeveloped marshland do not display the striking die-off and bank erosion. The pattern cued the researchers to the possibility that recreational fishing was the trigger, Coverdale says. Few people wade into the swamp to fish.
Marshes are excellent model systems for observing the intersection of human impacts that can trigger environmental degradation, the authors say, because they have been exploited by humans for centuries, if not thousands of years, and are easily studied from aerial and satellite images.
"Marshes are one of the most heavily utilized resources worldwide," said Coverdale. "They are easily accessible, and provide shellfish, fuel, baitfish and opportunities for recreational anglers. A lot of those harvests are probably sustainable."But he is interested in the tipping points at which use of the marsh becomes unsustainable. The revelation of the slumbering menace of the mosquito ditches raises the prospect of other submerged impacts that may surface under the influence of new, contemporary pressures.
In the early twentieth century, Cape Cod was a very different place from the summer vacation destination it is today. As land use shifted from agriculture toward tourism, the local chamber of commerce funded an effort to draw off standing water through drainage ditches to suppress the mosquito population. The program was probably not very effective at controlling mosquito-borne disease, Coverdale says, but it did put a lot of people to work, and they were industrious. Over 2400 kilometers of old ditches stripe the marshes of the long, low-lying peninsula. The Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project continues ditch-dredging under the Barnstable County Department of Health and the Environment.
The ditching program had a relatively minor impact on the marshes compared to other forms of development, however. Following the Second World War, Cape Cod developed rapidly, nearly tripling in permanent human population between 1940 and 1976, when a new awareness of the ecological and economic benefits of the marsh brought strict limitations on further development. Ditches claimed only 2 percent of the marsh, compared with the 70 percent affected by roads, houses, restaurants, marinas, and other hallmarks of a modern coastal community. Alone, the ditches did not fundamentally alter the marsh ecosystem. The species that colonized the ditches were already present in the marsh; the WPA's remodeling project just moved them around. The additional pressure of recreational fishing changed that equilibrium.
How do Cape Cod residents and local fishing enthusiasts feel about this news? Coverdale says the area has a strong conservation ethic. People remember what the Cape looked like when their parents lived there, and are unhappy with the changes. As a fishing enthusiast himself, Coverdale does not see ecologists and fishermen as opposing forces.
"People enjoy catching fish today, but they come back year after year. They want to see the fish there tomorrow," Coverdale said. He has faith that the tendency of residents and long-time visitors to take the long view will make a solution possible. A system of catch and release could make fishing the Cape sustainable and allow the local community to retain its fishing heritage.

The Four Steps Required to Keep Monsanto OUT of Your Garden
Seed catalogs are starting to arrive in mailboxes across the Northern Hemisphere with home gardeners everywhere starting to plan which seeds they will sow in their spring gardens.
A positive trend in recent years is the growing number of gardening enthusiasts choosing to plant gardens using organic and/or heirloom seeds.
What most of these home gardeners don?t realize is that corporate behemoth and GMO titan Monsanto has been gobbling up seed companies faster than a caterpillar can munch a tomato plant!
This means that a home gardener could purchase organic and/or heirloom seeds and unknowingly be supporting the development and proliferation of genetically modified crops because Monsanto now owns many of the names of the seeds themselves!
Planting a sustainable home garden is much more than just choosing certified organic seeds and seedlings because Monsanto has cleverly positioned itself to make money off the home gardening trend whenever and wherever the seeds whose names they own are purchased.

Pebble smart watch app for Android now available
For those of you who have one on the way, Kickstarter-funded smart watch maker Pebble has released its Android app onto Google Play today. The app allows the Pebble smart watch to connect to your Android phone over Bluetooth, showing information like weather, email alerts, incoming calls and messages. In addition, it acts as a "dashboard" for the watch, notifying you of software updates, allowing you to install new watchfaces and assisting with troubleshooting.
The watch itself is now shipping to Kickstarter backers on a first come, first served basis. If you've got one coming, be sure to shout out in the comments.

I wonder if some of the Wall Street whiners need to listen to Apple's Q1 FY13 earnings call with investors again. Of course, I have to remind myself that most of these investors are not actually investing in Apple, that they are not investing in the company. Instead, they're investing in the chance that they'll be able to turn a profit based on the stock price.

Online Casino Makes Over 500K, Skirting Laws With Legally ?Gray? Digital Currency, BitCoin
Online casinos are finding a second chance at life thanks to an alternative digital currency known as Bitcoin. Bitcoins are a completely digital currency managed through a decentralized network of exchanges, based off the research of mysterious computer scientist, Satoshi Nakamoto, who dreamt of developing a currency immune to politicians or banks. As trust in the currency emerged after its launch in 2009, Bitcoins developed a steady exchange value with the U.S. dollar and gave once-banned industries a legal crevasse to thrive in. This week, one of the largest online casinos reported profit of $596,000 (or ?33,310). “These tiny startups are hitting some major online casino pain points, they’re crushing it on those fronts and as an entrepreneur, I think that’s rad?they are leveraging a disruptive technology to try and kick a large-scale industry in the balls,” said Peter Vessenes, the CEO of CoinLab, which helps companies earn Bitcoins from gamers. Bitcoin creation and distribution is built into the very software algorithms that underlies the digital transactions. Independently operated Bitcoin “mines” are allocated a specific amount of currency based on the expensive computing power they dedicate to the intensive number crunching necessary to track and confirm transactions. In this way, Bitcoin avoids the legal and political difficulties of a central issuer. While Bitcoin has stabilized against the U.S. Dollar, the currency is still a risky bet (no pun intended). Bitcoin operators have been subject to file corruption and hacking, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars to literally disappear.
