Cats are the most popular pet in the country. But many miss out on regular veterinary visits because the trip can be taxing, for human and feline alike.??

But just as with any pet, regular preventive veterinary checkups are essential?particularly as your cat ages and becomes more prone to weight gain, diabetes, and dental disease.

In honor of Feline Pine's "Take Your Cat to the Vet Week," here are some cat-friendly tips to make feline health-care visits easier for everyone.

1. Get your cat used to his carrier.

Well before the day of the vet visit, try leaving the carrier out with the door open and a tasty treat inside. Make sure the carrier is large enough for your cat to move around comfortably. Let him rest inside the carrier and then leave when he wants to. Positive experiences with the carrier beforehand can help avert the notorious mad dash for a hiding spot whenever the carrier appears.

2. Find a cat-friendly veterinarian.

Some vets focus exclusively on cats, while others have set up their space so that your kitty does not have to come nose-to-nose with a curious canine. Check out the American Association of Feline Practitioners to find an accommodating veterinarian.

3. Praise your cat for a job well done.

Verbal reassurance, a treat through the wire of her carrier, and a steady stream of pets will help to reassure your cat that she is loved and safe?and will survive this harrowing trip.

4. Make a list.

Write down any questions or concerns that you may have about your cat's health or behavior, so you can make the most of your visit. Don?t be afraid to ask "silly" questions?that's what your veterinarian is there for. Learn what you need to know in order to keep your cat healthy and happy for many years.

For more extensive tips on getting your cat to the vet, see the AAFP's brochure [PDF] on reducing the stress of veterinary visits for your cat.

Preventive care and diagnosing a health problem early on can actually save you money. We've got resources to make it easier to afford those yearly (or twice-yearly) vet visits that are key to helping you and your cat enjoy a long, healthy life together:

America's coolest new diners

Ryan Donahue / via Travel + Leisure

The Fremont Diner in Sonoma, Calif., sports a reclaimed-wood bar, vintage metal stools and screened-in wraparound porch. It's open for breakfast and lunch only.

By Christine Ajudua, Travel + Leisure

At chef Patrick Acu?a's diner, patrons sit elbow-to-elbow on stools along the bright-red Formica bar. While the setup is familiar, the menu pushes the boundaries of diner food ? serving fried chicken in a sushi roll.?

Slideshow: See the coolest new diners?

Roll On Sushi Diner is doing its part to keep Austin, Texas, weird and has won over locals since opening in 2011. It?s just one example of the evolution of the diner, which began as a prefab stainless-steel dining car (circa 1872 in Providence, R.I.) serving burgers and blue-plate specials and was immortalized by painter Edward Hopper as a late-night refuge. These days, the diner is going gourmet, as critically acclaimed chefs spice up classic American dishes with Asian, Mexican and other artisanal flavors. ? ?

Owner and pit master Chad Harris takes a Slow Food approach at the Fremont Diner in Sonoma, Calif., sourcing ingredients from the farm, orchard and chicken coop out back for comfort foods like shrimp and grits with house-made sausages. The reclaimed-wood bar, vintage metal stools and screened-in porch make this an attractive place to polish off a slice of fried pie and a bottle of local wine ? and that inviting nature is an enduring part of the diner?s DNA.?

?A diner is a gathering place for regulars and strangers, where all are welcome,? says Richard Gutman, author of "American Diner: Then & Now"?and curator of Rhode Island?s Johnson & Wales University Culinary Arts Museum. ?You can go in shorts and a tee or in a tux after the prom. You also feel like you can talk to the person you?re rubbing elbows with at the counter, and that?s not only to ask her to pass the ketchup.??

That kind of anything-goes attitude, and 24/7 service, draws folks out of bars and into the leather booths of the Bowery Diner on New York?s Lower East Side. The signature burger comes with pastrami that?s brined and smoked in house. Purists will balk at some of these fancy touches and the higher-than-Denny?s prices. But a round of the Bowery Diner?s habit-forming milk shakes ? in creative flavors like cheesecake and lemon meringue, spiked and topped with cream ? should brighten the mood.?

All quibbling aside, everyone loves a good diner, whether greasy spoon or gourmet.?

Settler's 500-year family record found | Stuff.co.nz

Historic document reveals settler's story

TRACY NEAL Seonaid Lewis

REMARKABLE FIND: Seonaid Lewis with the 500-year-old Jennings family tree.

Details of a 500-year history of the family of an early Nelson settler have been found in the attic of a house on Auckland's Waiheke Island.

The document, titled A Genealogy of the Jennings, covers the family history of David Jennings, a solicitor who emigrated from England to Nelson in 1849 and eventually became a farmer in Lower Moutere and later Motueka.

Auckland Libraries desperately wants to reunite the family tree with its owner, or a descendant of the family whose history is charted on the document, which was created more than 40 years ago.

The large family tree has been intricately documented on an A2 (large poster-sized) sheet of paper. It was found in the attic of a house on Waiheke Island and given to the local library for safekeeping.

Family history librarian Seonaid Lewis, from Auckland Libraries' Central Auckland Research Centre, said the family research went back about 500 years and included images of significant family members.

Ms Lewis said that after the 43-year-old document was handed in to the Waiheke Library, it was restored and preserved by library preservation specialists.

She described the find as a "remarkable example of genealogical research".

"You might expect to find such a comprehensive family tree in England, so it is pure gold to find a piece of work like this in an attic in New Zealand."

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Nelson, Marlborough and Westland Provincial Districts] lists Jennings as an "Old Colonist", who with his wife and two children left Gravesend on the ship Mary and arrived at Wakatu in February, 1849.

Details recorded on the family tree reveal that from 1831 to 1848, he lived at various London addresses, including the Strand and Whitechapel Rd. He then "emigrated to the Nelson province via France, where the third child was born".

Jennings settled in Lower Moutere and bought the property named Moutere House, where he farmed and raised cattle. In 1852, he bought about 81 hectares of land on the west bank of the Motueka River at Pangototara, and in 1855 he built a new house for his family.

He was instrumental in getting a post office for Motueka, was a member of the local road board, and for many years was chairman of the Riwaka School committee.

He had an active interest in the building and management of schools under the Nelson Education Act, and in building bridges and other road work under the Provincial Road Board Act.

Jennings remained at his Motueka property until he died on December 10, 1877.

He and his wife had six sons and five daughters.

?It is very apt that we begin this search during Family History Month, and we hope to return this information to its family,? Ms Lewis said.

Features of the family tree which may assist with identification are:

Titled A Genealogy of the Jennings.

Compiled from the records of the Drapers' Company of London and family records in A Kentish Country House by Mary Adelaide, Lady Jennings.

Details the line of David Jennings following his arrival in New Zealand in 1849.

Features a drawing of Hall House, Jennings' English home.

Compiled by a son-in-law of Laurence Arthur Jennings, elder son of the Rev Charles W Jennings, 7th of the 12th issue. Signed and dated "Keiller 1969".

Career Advice For Your Life-Knowing What You Want To Do ...

Knowing what you want to do with your life is a question everyone is faced with. Most people have paths they want to follow. Some want to be doctors, some want to be lawyers, fire fighters, police officers, CEOs. The list goes on and on. But what happens when all of the ?standard? career choices simply do not appeal to you? What do you do then? Should you trudge on with life, going through the motions, slaving away at a job you hate?

The best bit of Career Advice For Your Life you will ever get is to find a job you love. As they say, find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life. It?s cheesy, I know, but it is true. You need to find something you enjoy doing, or at the very least something you do not hate.

For people who simply can not force themselves into the standard mold, you will probably want to be a little more adventurous and try something new. Typically people like this are the ones who go out and start their own business. If you can not see yourself going to college and doing all the standard stuff, becoming an office drone, then why not be your own boss?

Everyone?s situation is different and most people are not in a position to go and open up their own restaurant or something, but it does not have to end there. The problem with modern society, and with the Career Advice For Your Life that they give is that they are too focused on the old ways.

People still are not use to the internet, at least not when it comes to making a living. Yeah, sure, everyone uses the internet for businesses. I am sure you have gone to Walmart?s website to check something out. But people are still dubious about using the internet as their sole source of income.

If you can not envision yourself as working a more conventional job, then why not work an unconventional one online? Making your career on the web can not only yield you a lot more money, but it gives you a lot more freedom which in turn allows you to use that money to live your life to the fullest.

The internet, unlike all other forms of business, really does not require that much money to get going so even if you are strapped for cash, you can get the ball rolling and get your very own business off the ground and making you money.

The best Career Advice For Your Life is simply that there are always options. Not everything is black or white, you do not have to follow the standard path and become an office drone. If you want something more out of life then by all means, go out and seize it.

This world is founded on the principle of people going out and making a name for yourself, and the internet provides a new frontier that lets you do just that. So whether you want to follow a more traditional career choice, or open your own business, or delve into the web. There are always options.

Ofcom approves Everything Everywhere's early 4G plans, starting next month

While Brits still languish at the back of the queue for LTE, there is at least a sliver of hope that regulator Ofcom is moving forward with plans for 4G provision. It's announced today that carrier Everything Everywhere (the combined network of Orange and T-Mobile) will be allowed to use its 1800 MHz spectrum to push out next-generation phone services. Ofcom decided that the change to the UK network's license would deliver "significant benefits to consumers, and that there is no material risk that those benefits will be outweighed by a distortion of competition." Auctions for additional 800 and 2.6 GHz bands are still on track to happen later this year, aiming for a roll-out through 2013. Everything Everywhere will be allowed to use LTE and (bizarrely) WiMAX starting 11 September 2012, although this may not be the launch date for any commercial service -- which could be unfortunate. The UK's comms regulator goes into the specifics after the break.

Mission: Reunite Purple Hearts with recipients' families - Typepad

NBC's Ron Allen has the story of how one man is making it his mission to recover Purple Hearts and return them to the families of the recipients.

Craig Stanley, NBC News writes

On Christmas Day in 2009, Vermont National Guard Capt. Zachariah Fike received a gift from his mother, Joyce ? a Purple Heart medal that she found in an old antique store.

But instead of displaying the medal in his home, Zac, who collects antiques, immediately took to the Internet. He began researching the name engraved in the?brass finish ? Corrado Piccoli ? in hopes of returning the medal to its rightful owner.

?[For] a lot of these families, it?s closure,? Fike says of the Purple Heart medal. ?It?s the only tangible thing that the families received after their loved one died. It?s something you can touch, that you can hold, that you can look at. And that?s all they have of him. It?s probably the most important thing in their lives.?

Using the Internet ? along with documents found at a local high school and library, ? Fike obtained information about the medal?s recipient, including his draft out of junior college and the mission liberating a French village during World War II, that would ultimately lead to his death.

The amateur investigator eventually found Piccoli?s surviving relatives ? including his sister, Adeline Rockko of Watertown, N.Y., to whom he placed a call.

Through the research, Fike says, he got to know the family so well that upon making contact, he reminded Adeline of things she?d forgotten and was able to even share things about her brother she?d never known.

?I had the conversation with Zac and it was like opening a door in a closet that?s full of secrets ? memories and everything just floats out,? Adeline said. ?And the memories came back, they were very vivid.?

The connection has become the foundation for a close relationship between the two families, and set the groundwork for a first-ever Piccoli family reunion back in 2011, when dozens came together for a formal presentation of Corrado Piccoli?s Purple Heart.

?I felt throughout the process that [Piccoli] was communicating with me,? Fike said. I really felt like I was the messenger in the return, and in essence, it brought his family back together. So, I feel that I am a part of him and his family. And I do consider him a brother in arms again. I consider them a second family.?

A third-generation soldier, Fike is well aware?of the sentimental significance of the Purple Heart medal. Since 1932, it has been presented to families of soldiers who lost their lives in combat, as well as to soldiers who have been wounded in action ? as was the case with Zac, who was wounded in Afghanistan on Sept. 11, 2010.

?I?m just glad to be here,? Fike said. ?I?m glad I can be on a wall of honor in my mom?s home. And I would hope one day, if my medal was lost, that somebody would do the same thing that I do.?

Since the return of Piccoli?s medal, Fike has returned five more. He acquires them in a variety of places, including Craigslist and nursing homes ? he even was given one from a landfill. He?s working on returning half a dozen others ? and says he comes across more every week. Through word of mouth, Fike has become the go-to resource for tracking and returning lost medals. ?

?People from that generation ... are passing by the day, he said. ?Unfortunately [the medals] are misplaced during moves over the years. They?re sold by family members that don?t either understand or appreciate the value of them?so they end up in antique shops and things of that nature.?

In fact, Fike?s mother originally picked up the valuable artifact at the antique shop because she thought her son would appreciate the addition to his collection. Fike, quite the antique aficionado, has been collecting memorabilia for years ? including photographs and record players.

Joyce knew her son would appreciate the medal ? but had no idea the extent to which he?d go to return it.

?I thought he was going to keep it in his collection, so it surprised me that he has done this and it?s taken off the way it has,? she said. ?I?m very proud of him for doing it. When I met these families and heard their stories, he?s done the right thing instead of keeping them in his collection.?

As for Fike, he is committed to continuing to his own mission of restoring these lost medals.

?I?ve always had that passion ? even before, you know, I was wounded. I just grew up in a military family and I learned to appreciate military service and sacrifice. I think it adds to the allure of the story, absolutely. But I don?t think it makes me any more inclined to do what I do.??
