Wise, Ink. | The Self-Publishing Stigma: Do We Deserve It?

Publishing is on the cusp of the indie-publishing revolution?if you are a reader of our blog, you know that we talk about this all the time. There are lots of reasons to be down on traditional publishing that we don?t shy away from (the eBook pricing scandals, the elitist attitude, etc.), and Wise, Ink exists to comment on the changes in publishing and call it like we see it. On that note, we clearly see the self-publishing practices that have caused the ?stigma? that ?elitist? publishing folks turn their noses up at. And guess what, self-published authors: YOU SHOULD TOO.

It?s time to stop whining about the stigma and DO SOMETHING about it. I could write a list of all the mistakes I?ve seen in self-publishing (from an unknown author putting his/her face on the front cover to refusing to listen to Stephen King?s advice about the craft in his book On Writing). However, that would take twelve days. The number one, biggest mistake in self-publishing today doesn?t have to do with the cover design or the marketing. The biggest mistake in self-publishing today is: Publishing before the book is ready!

I know?this sounds oh-so simple. But the truth is that most brand-new authors truly don?t know what it takes to make a self-published book successful. Heck, many ?veteran? self-published authors don?t know what it takes, either?they?re often the ones who created the often well-deserved self-publishing stigma.

Writing 60,000 words is easy. Did you just hear that symphony of gasps and indignant rebuttals from authors around the globe? Yes, I said it?writing 60,000 words IS EASY. It takes time, but that doesn?t make the act itself difficult. What is difficult is doing it well. Yes, some people are just truly more talented at writing than others. Does this mean that writing is not a learned skill that is improved by greater understanding and practice? No. It?s like any other art form: talent can only take you so far, and then training comes in to refine the talent.

If authors don?t take the time to read books on the craft, take writing classes, learn the rules, get critiques, read other books in the genre, take the time to research the genre?s audience, write multiple drafts and rewrite scenes and sequences multiple times, etc. (I could go on, and on, and on?), the book will NOT be ready to publish. It won?t even be ready for the editor. Unfortunately, this has not stopped many books from being self-published before they?re ready for the marketplace, thus exacerbating and supporting the stigma self-publishing is fighting.

Self-publishing poorly is just too easy nowadays. There are too many publish-instantly-for-free buttons out there that keep duping would-be successful self-published authors into just ?getting it out there,? preventing them from ever having success and inflaming the already red and itchy rash that is the self-publishing stigma. The answer is to STOP FALLING FOR IT.

Self-publishing is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. It should not be easier simply because you don?t have to go through agents or traditional publishers. It has the potential to be very rewarding?I would argue that it has the potential to be even more rewarding than traditional publishing. That is if it?s done right and well.

It?s time for self-publishing authors to quit jumping the gun. It?s time to put in the time, energy, and money (remember?time IS money, and it takes LOTS AND LOTS of TIME to make it right) to publish the right way. It?s time to take some responsibility?let?s stop the practices that make self-publishing deserving of the stigma. The success of the indie-author revolution depends on it!

2 California Men Arrested in Insurance Fraud Scam

Authorities say two California men were arrested this week on suspicion of running an insurance fraud scam that bilked multiple companies for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said Friday 48-year-old Louis Houston of Richmond and 28-year-old Cedric Birdell Jackson Jr. of Fresno were arrested on suspicion of numerous counts of fraud, burglary and perjury after a year-long investigation by the California Department of Insurance.

Authorities say the pair filed more than 165 loss claims since 2000, scamming insurance companies for between $400,000 and $600,000.

Jones says the men filed claims for alleged traffic collisions, stolen vehicles, vehicle vandalisms and residential fires.

The two were expected to be booked into jail, with bail at $1.865 million for Houston and $620,000 for Jackson. It was not immediately clear whether the men had retained attorneys.

F1: Hungary Sunday quotes: Force India

Nico Hulkenberg - 11th: "A very difficult race, to be honest. I struggled a lot with the balance this afternoon and we just didn't have good enough pace. The rear tyre degradation was also high and it wasn't easy towards the end of the race. So with all things considered I think P11 was the maximum that was possible because we didn't make any mistakes and the two-stop strategy was definitely the right decision. We were not far away from the points, but we still need to go away and analyse what happened so that we can improve in time for the next race."

Paul di Resta - 12th: "I don't think P12 is a fair reflection of the speed we had in the car today. My race was compromised by a poor start and I lost a few positions going into turn one. I had the same issue in Germany last week so we need to understand how we can improve that going forward because it's hurting our track position. The first few laps were quite tough but the car came alive after lap four and brought me back into contention. Unfortunately it was impossible to maximise the speed of the car because there was no chance to overtake and once the pit stops were complete it was just a case of bringing the car home."

Dr Vijay Mallya, Team Principal & Managing Director: "We've shown flashes of speed this weekend, but ultimately we haven't been consistent enough to achieve our goal of finishing in the points. We didn't qualify well enough and that hurt us this afternoon because there was little chance to progress on a track where overtaking is so difficult. There was no room to improvise with the strategy and our two-stop approach was definitely the right call considering the cars that we were racing against. We will take the positives from the last few days and try to understand where we can find more performance so that we can come back stronger after the summer break."

Another Writer's Journey ? Ed Griffin ? Danielle deValera

?My guest blogger this month is Ed Griffin, who teaches creative writing at Matsqui Prison, a medium-security prison in Canada. Ed has just released his new eboook ? a novel entitled Prisoners of the Williwaw ? on Amazon. Over to you, Ed.

?

In the 1980s, my wife and I owned a mom and pop commercial greenhouse. Our business was prospering, but something was wrong. My life was planting seeds, growing tiny plants and selling vegetables and garden plants in the spring. I was becoming what I grew ? a cabbage, or maybe a petunia. My mind was dying and I knew it.

????????? I started playing around with writing. After supper every night I would go out to my ?office,? a little added-on room between our house and the garage. It had windows to the front and back and a space heater that was adequate for spring and fall, but not winter. I would sit down at the typewriter and follow my creative muse.

????????? Whole worlds opened to me. I wrote about the area behind my childhood garage where I practiced pitching, and dreamed of reaching the major leagues. I wrote a short story about a group of prisoners on an island. I wrote a poem about getting along with the Russians. Hours passed. Suddenly, as I wrote, an alarm would sometimes ring in the house. The alarm meant I hadn?t turned the heat on in the greenhouses. I had to shut the door on the vibrant world that grew on the paper in front of me and hurry to the greenhouses to start the furnaces.

????????? An hour later I?d be back at the typewriter. Type a sentence, stop, look at it, realize it wasn?t quite true and then search deeper. Layers of middle-aged half-truths disappeared, the comfortable maxims I had surrounded myself with ? ?Business is good. Don?t make any changes,? and ?Relax. You?re getting older.? The fires of my youth burned again ? civil rights, world peace, a place in the sun for every person. The idealism that had lain dormant for eight years sparked back into life.

????????? Isaiah was on the scene again, reminding me of the words I read in the seminary and tried to live when I was a priest:

????????? I have appointed you to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison and those who live in darkness from the dungeon. [Chapter 42-6]

????????? As I wrote I dug, I searched always deeper, trying to reach the truth. It might be easy to speak a lie, but it wasn?t easy to write one. I started to unravel the tangled skein that was me. These revelations came, not from writing philosophy or self-help dictums, but from writing fiction. Put a man and a woman in a fictional situation. What does the woman really think? What does the man think? Is this real? Is this how people are? Where do I get my ideas? What is human nature all about? Who am I?

????????? For example, as I wrote about the prisoners on the island, I got to know each one of them. How did they get into crime? Why were they different than me? Did they have a religious education as I did? What did they think about God? Was God a mean father for them or a gentle parent? What did I think about God?

???????? Amazing. The seminary had tried for twelve years to teach me how to meditate, and here I was doing it while I wrote.

Apple pondered strategic investment in Twitter: NYT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc held discussions in recent months about possibly investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Twitter to gain a social networking presence, the New York Times on Friday, cited people briefed on the matter as saying.

The iPhone and iPad maker, which has never delved deeply into a social media space dominated by Facebook Inc , at one point considered an investment that would have valued the microblogging service at $10 billion but the two were not in negotiations now, the newspaper reported.

Apple declined comment. Twitter did not respond to requests for comment on the deal, which the newspaper said might presage closer ties between the two.

Apple typically prefers to acquire technologies by buying up startups or smaller firms, but on Friday, it said it struck an agreement to buy mobile security firm AuthenTec for $356 million.

Twitter, the Internet phenomenon with some 140 million users that allows people to "tweet" 140-character messages, is already integrated into Apple smartphones and tablets.

The newspaper did not cite its sources on why the world's most valuable technology corporation, which thrives on designing and fashioning hardware, would be interested in buying a slice of the fledgling Internet company.

Twitter executives repeatedly say they are in no rush to seek additional financing, either privately or on public markets, since they have "truckloads" of cash. But the company, once viewed as a promising IPO candidate, has been struggling to earn revenue off the enormous volume of messages it hosts.

FDA approves personalized therapy for tough-to-treat colorectal ...

New Delhi, July 26

p>There's new hope for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with the US FDA approving the first personalized therapy for its treatment. More than 42,000 new CRC are estimated to occur in India in 2012, doctors say.

The FDA nod for Erbitux is based on data from a large scale patient study titled CRYSTAL (Cetuximab combined with iRinotecan in first-line therapY for metaSTatic colorectAL cancer) conducted outside the U.S, said an official release announcing the approval.

?The totality of the data from CRYSTAL, along with data from other Erbitux trials, provide compelling and consistent evidence of the benefit of Erbitux in the treatment of KRAS mutation negative (wild-type) EGFR-expressing mCRC,? said Ashok Vaid, Chairman of the Medanta Cancer Institute, Gurgaon.

Colorectal cancer occurs when the disease has spread to at least one distant organ and tissues, such as the liver, lungs, lining of the abdomen or ovaries. Generally, only 12 percent of patients affected with this form of the disease survive beyond five years.

However, once they were treated with cetuximab (Erbitux), combined with the chemotherapy currently in use, the patients? survival rate had gone up to as much as 20 percent and with significant decrease in the risk of disease progression compared to patients receiving only the present line of chemotherapy, found an analysis of the study data against the advanced stage of cancer centres.

Air Conditioner vs. Heat Pump-Climate Is the Key

When it comes to heating and cooling equipment, numerous people are confused by the many options available. Whether you are having your unit repaired or need to replace it, knowing the variations between your alternatives can help you make more knowledgeable decisions. Heat pumps and air conditioners each have their own characteristics, and deciding on the best one to have put in will depend on your climate and how you heat and cool your home.

Throughout the summer, air conditioners and heat pumps work the same. Refrigerant in a cold, liquid state moves through the evaporator coil. The unit?s blower blows air past the coils, chilling the air. The coils then soak up heat from the home and the refrigerant inside expands into a gas. This gas moves outside to the condenser where the refrigerant loses its heat as a fan blows over the coils. The refrigerant then moves into a compressor to be compressed back into a cold, liquid condition to move back into the home?s evaporator coils and repeat the procedure.

In the wintertime, heat pumps turn this cooling method backwards. So instead of drawing heat from the home and expelling it outside, heat from the outside is pumped into the dwelling. These are commonly not very effective if you live in an area where it generally freezes in the winter, but for mild areas in the South with typical winter lows around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, this equipment works well for warming a house.

If you have an air conditioning system set up, you will still need another heating unit to keep you warm throughout the winter season. If you have an existing furnace that continuously needs repair, look at a heat pump to replace it and your A/C system if you dwell in an area with a mild winter climate. Talk to your HVAC service technician to determine if you require a new heating or cooling device, and what your best alternatives are.

Keeping your home warm in the winter season and cool in the summer time is a matter of having the proper equipment for the job. Your decision to have either a heat pump to heat your home or an air conditioner and auxiliary furnace will establish how comfortable your home is all through the year.

Batavia representatives explain property tax process

BATAVIA ? Batavia resident Terrence Pogge said he was shocked after receiving what he called a ?huge jump? in his school taxes this year.

?It?s not that I don?t support what they are doing,? said
Pogge, a former teacher. ?I?m more concerned about the district?s expenses. I have questions about the district?s management and efficiency.?

Pogge was one of 80 to 100 people who attended Tuesday?s Eggs & Issues program at Batavia High School titled ?Understanding Your Property Tax Increase.? The Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Batavia MainStreet sponsored the program.

Representatives from the Batavia School District, city of Batavia, Batavia Park District and the Batavia Library District spoke at the meeting.

Rising school district property taxes generated much of the interest at the meeting. Residents saw an average increase of 10.8 percent in their school taxes this year, said Kris Monn, the district?s assistant superintendent for finance.

Monn explained that the school board from 2007 to 2010 abated $6.3 million of taxes from the community to respond to the economic crisis. In 2011, Monn said the board no longer had any reserves to lower the debt payment and refused to burden future generations with increased debt.

?The tax increase and extension were allowed to return to their natural level, resulting in a large increase on the 2012 tax bills,? Monn said.

The school board had previously agreed to keep the district?s tax rate at $4.69 per $100 of assessed valuation as part of the community?s support in 2007 of a $75 million bond project to fund the expansion of Batavia High School and other construction projects.

Monn said homeowners next year should see an increase of $50 in their school taxes, assuming an average property value decrease of 5 percent.

The district is projecting a surplus of $143,000 in its operating fund for the 2012-2013 budget. A public hearing on the tentative budget is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St.

Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong told residents that if residents really want to lower their taxes, they should make their voices known at budget hearings.

?Everything starts off with the tentative budget,? he said. ?This is the time if you want to have input on the budget. When the tax bill comes out, it is too late to think about that government spending.?

There are 37 hours, 2 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

AT&T weaker business outlook dampens wireless strength

(Reuters) - AT&T Inc pulled back its outlook for business services this year, sending its shares down 3 percent despite its better than expected quarterly profit as it reduced costs from customer upgrades to smartphones such as the Apple Inc iPhone.

After pushing up AT&T's share price up 17 percent so far this year, investors pulled back on Tuesday due to economic uncertainties and expectations that the company will not be able to sustain its strong wireless profit margins once Apple launches its next iPhone, expected in the fourth quarter.

The company said that it no longer expects its revenue from business services to return to growth this year because of the weak economy. Chief Financial Officer John Stephens did not say when he expects growth to recur in an conference call because businesses are being "very careful" about their spending.

"We are still optimistic about our wireline business and believe particularly our business revenues are going to be positive going forward. It just may take us a little bit longer," the executive told analysts in a conference call.

AT&T revenue from business customers fell 1.5 percent in the second quarter to $9.1 billion.

While analysts said that the comment should not be a big surprise they said it dampened investor enthusiasm about the stronger than expected wireless quarter.

"Now the quarter is behind us the focus turns to the iPhone 5 and trying to model that impact as well the economy." said Roe Equity Research analyst Kevin Roe.

SLOWER UPGRADES HELP WIRELESS PROFIT

AT&T, the No. 2 U.S. wireless provider, reported better-than-expected wireless profit margins because it reduced the amount of subsidies it paid for devices including the iPhone by forcing customers to wait longer before upgrading.

It posted a wireless service margin of 45 percent, based on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. This was well ahead of the average expectation of 42.56 percent from five analysts.

"It was a very strong quarter driven by policies the company put in place on the wireless side," Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen said.

AT&T and its rivals Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel have been curtailing upgrades in an effort to reduce their costs for subsidies paid to Apple. They shoulder a hefty portion of the phone's cost to give a discount to customers who commit to a two-year contract.

AT&T said roughly 6 percent of its subscribers upgraded their phones in the second quarter, compared with about 7 percent in the first quarter.

AT&T was also likely helped in the second quarter as customers may be putting off buying phones until the next iPhone launch, which is expected in the fourth quarter.

MARGINS SEEN STRONG UNTIL Q4

Piper's Larsen said that while he expects strong wireless margins to continue into the current quarter, they will likely subside in the fourth quarter.

"I do expect a lot of this to reverse in the fourth quarter because of the expected iPhone refresh," Larsen said.

AT&T's profit rose to $3.90 billion, or 66 cents per share, from $3.59 billion, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier. The result beat Wall Street expectations of 63 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company added 320,000 contract customers in the second quarter, ahead of the average expectation of about 233,000 from six analysts contacted by Reuters. However, it was well behind the 888,000 net subscribers bigger rival Verizon Wireless added.

AT&T said it was helped by a record low 0.97 percent customer cancellation rate, known in the industry as churn, compared with 1.15 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Hudson Square analyst Todd Rethemeier noted AT&T's profit margin of 32.3 percent for its traditional wireline business was above his 31.8 percent estimate.

The company also said it saw an increase in the number of customers who moved from its unlimited data service plans to its tiered plans, under which customers are charged based on how much data they download.

According to AT&T, about 27 million people, or two-thirds of its smartphone subscribers, are now on tiered plans, compared with 45 percent a year ago.

The results followed AT&T's announcement last week of a new pricing structure aimed at boosting revenue and encouraging customers to connect more devices, besides phones, to its network.

Revenue rose to $31.6 billion from $31.5 billion but fell a little short of analysts' expectations for $31.7 billion.

During the quarter, AT&T sold 53 percent of its telephone directory business to private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP for $750 million in cash.

Despite the strong numbers, AT&T shares were down 3 percent at $34.31 in noon trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Some analysts had predicted that strong second-quarter results might fail to move AT&T's stock, which has risen about 14 percent so far this year due to its high dividend yield and earnings and revenue stability in the face of an uncertain global economy and low U.S. Treasury interest rates.

Small Biz is Different from Big Biz

Entrepreneurs, Featured Post, Strategic Planning Basics, Strategy and Strategic Planning ? Tags: Corporate Lifecycles, entrepreneurs, Ichak Adizes, Jett Excellence, Karen Jett, Shiny bauble, small business, Strategic Plan-ting, Strategic Planning, strategy

Have you ever had that moment when you suddenly had a core belief proven to be accurate? Or further, found proof that it?s not only accurate but also more important than you realized?

I had one of those moments myself today. While reading Corporate Lifecycles by Ichak Adizes, I had my belief that small businesses are different from larger organizations both confirmed and explained. I don?t want to bore you with all the geeky details (if you don?t think this is geeky I suggest you read the book or ask me more about it when you see me) so I will summarize it simply by stating:

The skill sets required by organizations change over time.
And even when the same skills are necessary in both a large company and a small business,
the application of those skills will be markedly different.

What does this mean to you as a small business owner? While you can learn a lot about how to successfully grow your business by looking at large successful companies, you must be careful to adapt what you learn and not simply adopt it with no changes.

For example, as small business owners we tend to have strong entrepreneurial tendencies. We see opportunity in everything that is going on around us. And we instantly start thinking about how we can harness that opportunity and make some money from it. As soon as we figure it out, we charge off in a new direction, without any real planning or thought as to whether we are using our time and energy for good or simply chasing a *shiny bauble*.

At the other end of the spectrum, large companies plan to plan. They precede their strategic planning with in depth research and departmental plans. They will spend weeks or months on strategic planning, investing hundreds, or even thousands, of people hours in the process.

Planning to plan tends to make large companies slow, especially when compared to the smaller company?s agility and ability to react instantly at the whim of the entrepreneurial owner. And yet, this level of planning also frequently results in large companies making more sound decisions with fewer erratic changes in direction. So planning is not all bad.

But be warned, the type of planning that large companies do is not suited for small business. It consumes too much time and resources and frustrates the entrepreneurial owner. Planning for the small business owner must be more flexible and time efficient.

Yes, small business can reap huge rewards from strategic planning. It will enable the entrepreneur to grow more quickly by helping her to easily identify *shiny baubles* so she can focus on real opportunities and move more quickly to the sales, revenues and resulting profits she desires.

However, one of the reasons that large companies find such great value in strategic planning is that the resulting plan is the product of multiple perspectives, or people?s experiences, coming together to form a greater whole. Gaining this perspective is challenging for the small business owner since he frequently doesn?t have a board of directors or management team he can involve in the process. And even if?he does, he may not want to risk losing control of decision making by including them.

So how can a small company adapt the strength of multiple perspectives in the strategic planning process? Before planning ask customers, employees, and possibly vendors key questions. Better yet, partner up with another small business and do your planning together. (Strategic Plan-ting? workshops do this for you.)

Small businesses can learn a great deal about being successful from large companies. By implementing what they learn they can grow more quickly and soundly. However, it?s important to adapt large company practices in a way that makes sense for small business.

Happy growing and have an excellent day!

Karen

*PS A shiny bauble is any distraction that looks like a great opportunity.*

Earning Money Online From An Internet Business Chance? ? Real ...

Easy on line searches reveal a plethora of options hyping which they are businesses, but most are not businesses at all. They are variously concealed sales schemes giving commissions. However, the appeal of independence and money, covered with the assurance that an person will become an owner" confuses many would-be entrepreneurs. Most of these possibilities lack attraction for seasoned owners of traditional brick-and-mortar and service businesses. I'm one of those entrepreneurs, having possessed many regular-old-businesses (furniture stores) before opting to go "Internet" and leave the rents, catalog and workers behind. It did not take long to observe that real business opportunities online are fairly slim. The obvious Internet options left me cold. The thought of employed in sales as an affiliate had some interest, until I found the tiny income included after subtracting marketing expenses.Sometimes the price was only the involvement of hours, days and days of work to make a quantity of money by recommending members to a site. Other times, each time a few hundred dollars of startup money was involved, I found an old-fashioned network marketing organization hiding behind it. Those "Businesses" may interest a neophyte afraid of responsibility and having low expectations. However, they're not rewarding to an individual who expects their business to support properties, cars and family. So, the question is, are you really searching for a business, or simply a structure to make some free cash?If you wish to have a, then you most likely know that businesses need start-up capital, risk, operating capital, advertising, advertising and a location to interact with customers. On the Internet, your business location is most likely your website. If you're thinking that's all you need, though, contemplate that without customers, you will have no revenue. It's a confusing proven fact that on the Internet there's no good "Location" for a business. There's no chaotic road corner, no affluent area. Each business owner should use marketing to draw customers. The drop of many Internet businesses is not lack of a good product and marketing, or having a sub-standard web site. If the business is effectively capitalized, and has not supplied their entire budget on website development (that's yet another story completely) their ruin is simply a lack of traffic due to ineffective marketing and advertising.Very several Internet business chances stress marketing more than they stress their products, but in my opinion that they should. Where the owner will pay for many solutions, one way is to have a marketing system. Some franchises offer that. (Consider national fast-food restaurants who all benefit from the same big advertising campaigns.) Another way would be to provide education in order that each owner/operator can control their own ads and advertising, either by carrying it out themselves or by outsourcing. Now, given the price of marketing and outsourcing, anybody considering starting an online business must keep an eye on their main point here. It seems clear, but you should not spend more than $49.99 to get that sale, if your income on an is $50. So, entrepreneurs should weigh their get back on investment very carefully before diving in to any new venture. The other consideration is recovering your startup costs. In old-fashioned companies, it usually usually takes years before looking to see a profit. Internet business start-up charges usually contain heavy web site design fees, and then marketing budgets and heavy marketing. These expenses may be reduced by learning and applying many skills, and keeping outsourcing expenditures to a minimum, If you're a "bootstrap" businessman, but there's still price involved. So consider what you really want when seeking to start an Internet business. You'll need a marketing program, a website and high-profit items. But most of all, you'll need education how to operate your business online. There have become few packages available which provide all that for you personally, however they do occur.

HBT: Yankees have interest in picking up Ankiel

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post hears that the Yankees ?have shown some interest? in picking up Rick Ankiel.

Ankiel was designated for assignment by the Nationals this week after batting just .228/.282/.411 with five home runs and a .694 OPS through 171 plate appearances. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com wrote at the time that the Yankees ?don?t seem interested? in Ankiel, but it?s possible things have changed over the past couple of days.

Brett Gardner will have right elbow surgery next week and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Nick Swisher left last night?s game against the Athletics with a mild left hip flexor strain and is considered day-to-day. Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones have been surprisingly productive in left field and Dewayne Wise has played well as an extra outfielder, but the Yankees figure to be on the lookout for alternatives in the coming days and weeks.

Ankiel, 33, can play all three outfield positions and has some pop from the left side, so he figures to latch on somewhere even if the Yankees pass.

Think Wise And Act Fast

Natural calamities hit all the time with little or no warning. They take lives and leave people wondering if there was anything they could have done to avert the tragedy. Though they are considered a normal part of life, natural disasters often leave death, destruction, and sadness in their wake. Those who were able to experience it, knows how it feels to become victims of life threatening calamities and that?s why they are equipped with all the disaster supplies needed.

A calamity doesn?t have to kill hundreds of people to be a tragedy. All it takes is one. Things will never be the same again after the death of someone you love due to calamity. It?s like a nightmare you?re trying to escape. You ask yourself if you could have done something to change what had happened. You blame yourself for not being able to do anything and you get consumed with sadness and regret for not having hugged or kissed her enough before he/she passes away. Though it may sound depressing but that is the reality of life after a hazardous calamity.

Despite the effects of calamity, many are still thankful especially for those victims, that they were able to prepare survival food to help them sustain because it?s one of the basic needs that everyone needs like water, canned goods, and ready to eat food long before the calamity hit. It may not be enough but at least they have something to fill their empty stomach and in order to survive after the tragedy.

Victims deals by trying to see the good that came out of that trying time. That event could be a major reason why your family become close to each other and value their relationship more than ever. They have to know where each family member is and how they are doing. What can be more devastating than losing someone you love so much? Life is too short to waste on non sense things and feelings, enjoy and have fun like today is the last day of your life.

Many are still blessed that even if they didn?t have food to eat and their houses was destroyed, they are still alive and still together because they have with them a survival kit which contain the basic first aid which could be helpful with what they have been gone through. In other words, you have to be prepared all the time and make sure that you and your family safety comes first.

Movie Review: 'The Dark Knight Rises' ? CBS Philly

(Tom Hardy as Bane battles Christian Bale as Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises.")

(Tom Hardy as Bane battles Christian Bale as Batman in ?The Dark Knight Rises.?)

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? The batflick question of the moment, of course, is, does The Dark Knight Rises rise as far as The Dark Knight rose?

The answer from this corner of the Batcave is: no, but it comes pretty darn close.

The Dark Knight Rises is the third installment in director Christopher Nolan?s Batman trilogy ? based on the DC Comics characters ? that began with 2005?s Batman Begins, the dark, compelling reinvention of the movie franchise, and continued with 2008?s The Dark Knight, the commercially applauded and critically lauded masterwork that was snubbed at Oscar time despite eight nominations and two Academy Awards, one of them a posthumous prize as best supporting actor for Heath Ledger.

3c2bd Movie Review: The Dark Knight Rises

(3? stars out of 4)

And if there?s an element missing in The Dark Knight Rises, if there?s one spark of electricity that we wish were there that isn?t, it?s Ledger?s villain, the Joker.

That said, the threequel is nonetheless a thoughtful and thought-provoking essay on modern-day morality, as well as a spectacular disaster epic, and a propulsive thriller with expert, dizzying action sequences.

For the astonishingly accomplished Nolan (Inception, Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia), who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan based on a story he co-wrote with David S. Goyer, this third at-Bat with the Caped Crusader is a gloomy and disturbing funhouse mirror that?s meant to reflect our collective paranoia in a post-9/11 universe, where fear of terrorism dukes it out with anxiety about financial collapse for the top spot on the worry list.

It takes place eight years after its predecessor left off, when Batman (Christian Bale) took the blame for crimes committed by DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) so that the citizens of Gotham City ?- which resembles and parallels New York City even more than usual -? can remain hopeful and not feel that a dent has appeared in their appreciation of Dent?s heroic behavior.

Thus do billionaire Bruce Wayne and alter ego crimefighter Batman remain in seclusion, tended to by loyal butler Alfred (Michael Caine).

But now Gotham?s recent peace and prosperity, aided by the disappearance of organized crime, is threatened by an unstoppable terrorist called Bane (Tom Hardy) and sneaky cat burglar Selina Kaye (Anne Hathaway), who would appear to be in cahoots thwarting Batman?s renewed efforts to protect Gotham and its populace.

Batman?s allies are police commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), entrepreneur and business manager Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and idealistic rookie cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), while Wayne Enterprises board member and philanthropist Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) offers Wayne the possibility of romantic involvement.

Nolan and his collaborators are after big game here, exploring themes such as truth, power, wealth, heroism, and justice. But despite occasional brief bursts of self-conscious speechifying, they never undermine the drama.

And, not to put too fine a point on the film?s topicality, but it would take a very stubbornly escapist viewer not to think about Occupy Wall Street when Bane attacks the Stock Exchange and lures Batman out of hiding even as he bankrupts Bruce Wayne.

Enough said.

The scope of Nolan?s noirish vision remains admirable, even if he lingers too long on gun battles, car chases, and fistfights; even if his choice of a voice for Bane makes much of his dialogue difficult to discern; even if he takes a bit too long (2? hours) to tell his concluding story; and even if he never quite tops his grabber of a James Bond-like opening sequence.

But he has the courage in a comic book-inspired movie to unmask and disarm his superhero and maintain the melancholy tone throughout, and he gets top-drawer contributions from Caine, Hathaway, Oldman, and Gordon-Levitt.

So we?ll battle 3? stars out of 4 for the The Dark Knights Rises.? The third jewel in Christopher Nolan?s crowning achievement will once again get a rise out of you.

Personal & Company Branding: How Strong is Your Brand ...

The branding goal for luxury real estate marketing professionals is instant brand recognition. When you first saw the image above in this post, what thoughts came to mind? First, did you recognize the brand? If so, how long did it take you to recognize it? If you are like most people who are attuned to popular culture you know that this is James Bond?s logo and you recognized it in a Nano-second.

Isn?t it amazing how three numbers and a gun can communicate such a potent message? That message is spy story (suspenseful action-adventure with international intrigue). It conjures images of the main character in the story that has mass appeal. He is an archetypical action hero who is suave, debonair, charismatic, sexually attractive, a lady?s man, with tongue-and-cheek humor, who is bent on protecting mankind from evil.

Likewise, the words, ?double 0 seven? have a similar impact. So do the first seven notes in the James Bond sound track (brand perfection in 7 notes). That image, the words and the sounds have made an indelible impression in your mind over the years and will likely be accessible to your recall for life. That is the power of branding!

This is the 50th anniversary of the famed James Bond franchise. The 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, is coming out this winter, starring Daniel Craig. The James Bond fan club is global. Are you thinking of seeing it?

Marketing luxury real estate at the level of market leadership requires that you establish an indelible brand in the minds of your target market. It requires instant brand recognition to sustain market leadership. How strong is your brand recognition?

Red Lantern: Cocktails and Bar Bites | BeantownEats {We Eat It. You ...

Chic. Exaggerated. Sexy. Three guesses to which Back Bay spot can be described by these four words. It?s one of the handful of both afterwork and after dusk hot spots on Stanhope Street: Red Lantern.

We sidled up to the bar for afterwork cocktails and bar bites on a Friday. I?d say we made quite a dent in both cocktail and appetizer menus. (This venture was unexpected, but too fun not to share, so I apologize for the iPhone pictures.)

The cocktail menu features wines and sake by the glass, beer on draft and bottled, martinis (served up), cocktails (highball or even tiki) and two scorpion bowls (serves four, $44) appropriately named Yin and Yang. Of course, we stuck to the cocktail portion of the menu. It?s hard for me to pass up any drink involving basil, nevermind when Hendrick?s gin is the main sprit, so I started with the Sumo. Crisp and refreshing for a martini, I would order this again on our next visit.

Sumo; Hendrick?s, fresh basil, grapefruit, sparkling ros? ($14)

Jon decided to go for the Tokyo, a fitting take on a classic Manhattan made with Japanese scotch. He enjoyed it, and I was impressed by the small sip that I took.

Tokyo; Suntory Yamazaki 12 whiskey, sweet vermouth, orange bitters ($14)

I have a simple requirement for cocktails: not too sweet! After a brief conversation with our friendly bartender, he convinced me to try the saketini as my next drink.? It?s easy to go overboard with St Germain, but it was a very well-balanced cocktail.? The rose water provided a strong floral nose, but was much less powerful in taste.

Rose Petal Saketini; Grey Goose, St. Germain, Ozeki Sake, Rose Water ($12)

We started off with a few appetizers, then decided to add a few more and call this meal our dinner.? The first appetizers were on the small portion side, and the later ones were much larger portions, resulting in maybe one appetizer too many for us.? Here I have laid them out in order of my personal preference.

Rock Shrimp Tempura; Coconut sriracha, Chili macadamia nuts ($14)

Creamier in texture than we expected, but full of flavor and a fun take on a traditional tempura.

Wood Fired Beef Skewers; Kalbi been, bean sprout salad, crushed cilantro ($12)

Beef cooked to a nice medium-medium rare, on skewers that make for easy sharing and the cool cilantro perfect for dipping.

Duck Buns; hoisin duck, mirin pickles, warm steamed buns ($10)

This appetizer is delicious, and fun to say! Buns were melt-in-your-mouth soft.? The tart pickles (barely pictured to the right) compliment the sweet hoisin duck.

Boneless Spareribs; smoked char sui, licorice ($12)

We are spoiled by the boneless spareribs at Bernard?s and I felt these didn?t live up to the comparison. The pork had good flavor, but was a touch on the tough side and the creamy cole slaw, although tasty, was unexpected and we would have preferred it on the side.

Pork Dumpling; pan fried, elephant garlic soy ($12)

Traditional pan-fried dumplings rounded out our marathon of tasty appetizers that allowed us to try several menu items and walk away completely satisfied.? Although we ate at bar on this occasion, I also envision Red Lantern as a great option for a large party dinner, where everyone orders one menu item and then shares with the rest of the table.? Also, a perfect excuse to try one of their scorpion bowls! Judging by the quality of their cocktails, I would expect their bowls to be above and beyond most others.? I was expecting Red Lantern to have good cocktails, but I wasn?t expecting to be so enamored by their food.? I?m already hoping we can get back their soon!

Have you been to Red Lantern? What was your favorite dish?

Business Ethics as a Core Course in Business Schools? What a ...

What a novel idea is right?? It seems that what is OBVIOUS sometimes is missed by the masses.? Honesty, integrity, and ethics are ? or should be ? the core foundation for which we operate in life.? Yet, as Luigi Zingales points out in his article: ?Business School should count ethics as a core course? it appears that all to often those who are at the top of the business food chain seem to forget the core of business fundamentals.

Zingales, in his article, states: ?Recent scandals at Barclays, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and other banks might give the impression that the financial sector has some serious morality problems. Unfortunately, it?s worse than that: We are dealing with a drop in ethical standards throughout the business world, and our graduate schools are partly to blame.?

The problem ? at one level ? is academics seem to be more concerned with theory than practical application.? Again, Zingales shares the following:

Most business schools do offer ethics classes. Yet these classes are generally divided into two categories. Some simply illustrate ethical dilemmas without taking a position on how people are expected to act. It is as if students were presented with the pros and cons of racial segregation, leaving them to decide which side they wanted to take.

Others hide behind the concept of corporate social responsibility, suggesting that social obligations rest on firms, not on individuals. I say ?hide? because a firm is nothing but an organized group of individuals. So before we talk about corporate social responsibility, we need to talk about individual social responsibility. If we do not recognize the latter, we cannot talk about the former.

I agree!? Ethics theory ? while valuable ? doesn?t go far enough to teach those who will face practical application what to do and when to do it when faced with pressure and temptation.? Theories are wonderful, but how many of us think about theory when faced with real life challenges in real time.

As a business ethics speaker, I was set up as the keynote speaker at a university in Canada.? My background was hidden from the faculty as the Dean of the Business School?wanted my presentation to impact both the student attendees as well as the faculty guests.? To that end, as we prepared to share dinner together before the presentation, one of the professors asked me a simple question ? ?What theory of ethics do you follow??

That question caught me a bit off guard as my mind raced to formulate an appropriate answer.? Then it hit me?? The answer just flowed from my mouth ? ?The theory that keeps you out of federal prison!?

?Oh? responded the professor, and quickly he found company somewhere else.? Discomfort created by my response is just what needs to take place when teaching ethics.? We, all too often, make ethics some luke warm course to fill a curriculum and fail to teach the real world application of what happens when ethics fail.? Zingales says:

The way to teach these ethics is not to set up a separate class in which a typically low-ranking professor preaches to students who would rather be somewhere else. This approach, common at business schools, serves only to perpetuate the idea that ethics are only for those students who aren?t smart enough to avoid getting caught.

Rather, ethics should become an integral part of the so-called core classes ? such as accounting, corporate finance, macroeconomics and microeconomics ? that tend to be taught by the most respected professors. These teachers should make their students aware of the reputational (and often legal) costs of violating ethical norms in real business settings, as well as the broader social downsides of acting solely in one?s individual best interest.

So here?s the deal?if your business school isn?t committed to teaching practical ethics then you can?t expect graduates to apply ethics in practical day-to-day applications.? What is practical ethics ? perhaps it?s ethics applied in such a manner that it keeps you out of an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs.
